What to Expect: Stonehenge

After pickup from Chippenham train station meeting point, travel by comfortable private car to your first stop:

In the first part of the trip you are greeted with the continuous view of England’s countryside as you’re driven to Salisbury Plain, the home of the UNESCO-listed stone circle: Stonehenge! Marvel at this prehistoric monument, whose origins go back four and a half millennia and is constructed on the axis of the midsummer sunrise. Archeologists best guess is that it has been an ancient sacred site aligned to the movements of the sun, a temple for rituals in honour of old gods, or gathering place for the religious group of druids. With the help of carbon dating, the construction’s age was identified. Creation of the henge began around 3100 BC and ended around 1600 BC. The monument took over 1500 years to be built as it is seen today! One of the secrets of Stonehenge is how the monolithic stones were transported from the Preseli mountains in Wales, over 240 miles away.  You can also visit the cutting-edge visitor centre to see the archaeological and virtual displays discovering even more stories about the prehistoric monument and the people who built it. What purpose did Stonehenge serve? A great question and one that might be not answered for a long time, but it is hard not to wonder about the mystery of this incredible feat of ancient architecture.

What to Expect: Castle Combe

After Stonehenge, you’ll go to Castle Combe which is believed to be the nicest village in South-England, maybe in all of Britain! The beauty of the village inspired many film directors and was used as a location for blockbusters like The Wolfman, Dr. Doolittle, Stardust, and Steven Spielberg’s Warhorse!  In the spring Castle Combe is quite wonderful with the blossoming flowers surrounded, the babbling river passing through the village and vividly green trees at the edge of the stone work. The ‘prettiest village in England’, with the houses being built out of Cotswold stone, Castle Combe is a quintessential English village, having dense history. This is a town where time has stood still.

Not far from the village itself is the castle which played a major role in the English Civil War. A complete overhaul was done by the National Trust in order to reclaim the former glory of this stronghold. The area of the castle has a strategic significance and had been used by chiefs, warlords and generals since ancient times. If you feel at home with old villages, or if you enjoy seeing quaint curiosities then you can’t leave this place out of your Tour!

What to Expect: Lacock Village

After Castle Combe, your next place on the list will be the village of Lacock, known for its medieval half-timbered houses. The village is also a famous filming location for British movies and TV series just like Castle Combe. If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series, Downtown Abbey, or Pride and Prejudice you can visit many iconic sites of the scenes from the motion pictures. Pay a visit to St. Cyriac’s Church, built in the 14th century, designated as a Grade 1 building; the ranking given only to buildings of exceptional interest! The calm interior with it’s cool air and religious atmosphere going to captivate you as well. Besides the church is a tithe barn that has been there since the foundation of the temple. It’s a well-preserved stone and timber made building in exceptional condition. If medieval architecture is what you are fond of then you must visit Lacock!

Your tour ends with as it began: at Chippenham Train Station, after travelling back in the comfort of your private car.
